Icy plume from Enceladus. Cassini spacecraft images of plumes of icy material extending from the surface of Enceladus, one of Saturn's moons. At left is the image as taken by the craft, with a colour enhanced version at right. These plumes could be geysers erupting from pressurised subsurface reservoirs of liquid water. Surface features on Enceladus do suggest the presence of a subsurface ocean, although this has not been confirmed. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft was launched in 1997 to investigate Saturn, its rings and its moons. This image was taken at a distance of 321,000 kilometres from Enceladus in February 2005 | |
