Saturn's moon Titan. Coloured infrared image of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. The colours represent infrared reflectance at 1.3 microns (left) and 1.6 microns (right),with red being lowest and white highest. The images reveal a bright equatorial band, possibly a mountainous plateau. It is suggested that the surface here is dominated by methane ice. Optical images of Titan are obscured by a stratosphere rich in organic compounds which are opaque at visible wavelengths. This image was made with an adaptive optics system on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) at Mauna Kea Observatory,Hawaii | |
