Saturn. True-colour Cassini spacecraft image of Saturn's northern hemisphere. Shadows from Saturn's rings are seen on the planet's surface. The blue colour of the northern hemisphere is caused by blue light being scattered by gases in the hemisphere's cloud-free upper atmosphere. It is not known why there are no clouds in the northern hemisphere, but it may be because of the colder temperatures caused by the shadows of the rings. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft was launched in 1997 to investigate Saturn, its rings and its moons. This image was taken at a distance of 720,000 kilometres from Saturn on 14 December 2004 | |
