Saturn,Hubble Space Telescope image. Saturn is the second largest planet in the Solar System. Its rings stretch nearly 300,000 kilometres. The colours of its cloud bands are due to the varying chemical composition of the high- level clouds in its atmosphere. These clouds contain ammonia and methane. Both the rings and the cloud bands are parallel to the planet's equator. This image was taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys on 22nd March 2004. The optics of the ACS are so fine that this view of Saturn will only be improved on when the Cassini spacecraft gets within around 23 million kilometres,in May 2004 | |
