Craters on Ganymede. Galileo image of a row of craters known as Enki Catena on Ganymede, the largest moon of Jupiter. These craters are thought to have formed in quick succession when fragments of a comet collided with the moon. The comet was probably broken up as it passed through the gravitational field of nearby Jupiter. The craters form a line some 150 kilometres in length. Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system, with a diameter of some 5270 kilometres. It orbits Jupiter at a distance of just over one million kilometres, taking around seven days to complete one orbit. Photographed on 5th April 1997 by the Galileo spacecraft | |
