Ganymede. Image gathered by the Galileo spacecraft showing surface features on Ganymede, the largest moon of Jupiter. The image shows a mixture of wide ridges and dense cratering, and is typical of the relatively dark surface which covers about half of Ganymede. The density of the impact craters suggests that this surface is very old, perhaps several billion years, and may even date back to Ganymede's formation. This image was taken on 27 June 1996 at a distance of 7563 kilometres. The smallest features visible are about 80 metres across | |
