Other visible volcanoes include Io's largest,Pele (centre),& Babbar Patera (lower left). Dark areas are volcanic hot spots. The 400-kilometre wide dar area around Pillan Patera is the result of a recent eruption. Red,orange & yellow areas are covered in various forms and compounds of sulphur. White areas are probably sulphur dioxide frost. Image taken at a range of 506,500 kilometres (km) on 19 September 1997. The smallest visible objects are 2km across.
