Volcano on Io. Enlarged portion of a view of Jupiter's moon Io showing a large volcanic plume (blue) coming from a region called Ra Patera. Io's yellowish colour comes from numerous compounds of sulphur which cover the surface. The blue colour of the plume is probably sulphur dioxide 'snow' condensing as it expands and cools. Io is one of the most volcanically-active bodies in the solar system. Its many volcanic features are thought to be geyser-like,and throw sulphur and sulphur dioxide gas 100km or more into space.
