Infrared image taken at 2.2 microns showing the aftermath (bright spot on planet's limb at bottom left) of the collision between fragment G of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 and Jupiter at 07.28 GMT on July 18,1994. The site of another impact is visible as the bright spot on the planet's limb at lower right. The comet broke up into more than 20 fragments during a close encounter with Jupiter in July 1992. Each impact is estimated to release an energy equivalent to at least one million hydrogen bombs. The image was taken by the Keck Telescope on Mauna Kea,Hawaii | |
