Great Red Spot. Voyager 2 spacecraft image of Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS,at centre). The colours of the image have been enhanced. The GRS is a large storm system which has existed for at least hundreds of years. It is about 26,000 kilometres long and 13,000 km wide; this compares with Earth's diameter of 12,700 km. The GRS consists of cold clouds which rotate anti- clockwise and stand 8 km above the surrounding cloud deck. The red colour may be due to either phosphorus condensing at the cloud tops or the presence of organic chemicals produced by lightning deep within Jupiter's atmosphere.
