False-colour infrared image of Jupiter taken with the IRCAM camera on the UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). Infrared and radio images are used to study the distribution of temperature and pressure in the Jovian atmosphere. This is mainly composed of hydrogen (about 82%),helium (18%) and traces of other gases such as methane. The temperature of the outer layers is about 170 Kelvin and is higher than the temperature of the immediate underlying layers.
