Artist's impression of the Soviet Phobos spacecraft making its final approach to Phobos (lower right),the larger of the two small Martian moons. The spacecraft was launched in July 1988,& is due to make its encounter with Phobos in April/May 1989,after 120 days orbiting & observing Mars. It will then approach Phobos, descending to within 50 metres of the moon's surface before releasing two lander probes. Phobos is shaped like a potato & measures 27x21x19km. It orbits 6000km above the Martian surface. The view shows Mars in the distance. The dark spots at top centre are two of its large, extinct volcanos | |
