False-colour Viking Orbiter photomosaic of Phobos, one of the two moons of the planet Mars. The picture shows numerous small craters. The uneven edge of the satellite at right is the terminator, where the dark side of the moon starts. Phobos is the innermost & larger of the two Martian satellites; the other is Deimos. Phobos is ellipsoid in shape,& measures 19x21x27 kilometres. It orbits Mars every 7.65 hours & is located some 9380 kilometres above the Martian surface. The two Viking spacecraft reached Mars in June & August 1976,& released their landers a month later. Viking Orbiter 2 operated until 1978,Viking Orbiter 1 until 1980 | |
