Martian rocks,true-colour Spirit rover image. The patterns of the rock layers (clearly seen at centre and centre left) are being studied for information on the processes that formed them. It is thought that the patterns indicate alternating erosion and deposition processes. Possible causes include volcanism and wind erosion. The colours of the image were created by combining three camera filters designed to approximate how a human would see the scene. A false-colour version enhancing the colour difference is seen in R360/236. This image was obtained with the panoramic camera on 8 March 2006,on the 774th Martian day of the rover's mission. The rocks are located in the Gusev Crater's Columbia Hills,in an area called the Home Plate | |
