Eagle crater. 360 degree panorama of the area around the Mars Rover Opportunity, showing its tracks leading from Eagle Crater (upper centre). Opportunity landed in Eagle crater on Mars on 24th January 2004. The crater is in a region called Meridiani Planum. Opportunity studied rocks and soil in and around Eagle crater for two months, before it headed to the much larger crater Endurance (not seen),over 600 metres away. Opportunity, and its twin probe Spirit, looked for evidence of water on Mars. Many of the rocks they found showed evidence of having been formed in water, rasing hopes that Mars may once have harboured life. Photographed on 26th March 2004 | |
