Opportunity rover. Map showing the region visited by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on the surface of Mars. Opportunity landed in "Eagle Crater" in the Meridiani Planum region of Mars on 24 January 2004. After examining the rock and soil of this crater for two months, the rover travelled to "Endurance Crater" to continue its research. Opportunity's mission has been extended beyond the initial three months and the scientists hope it will reach an area of "etched terrain" to the southeast where it will analyse exposed bedrock.
