Martian rock. Micrograph of a patch of rock on Mars, showing a spherical globule embedded in the rock. Such particles may have been formed by the cooling of molten rock,or by the accretion of successive layers around a smaller particle in water. This image was taken by the microscopic imaging instrument on the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity,on the rock outcrop called 'El Capitan'. Opportunity landed in the Meridiani Planum region of Mars on 24 January 2004. Geological investigations suggest that the surface of Meridiani Planum was once covered in water.
