Mineral map of Mars surface. Coloured map of the distribution of crystalline haematite on the rim of the crater in which the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity landed on 24 January 2004. Red & orange show high levels of the iron-containing mineral; blue & green low levels. The bedrock outcrop (white, across upper centre) does not contain much haematite, but the soil does. It is poorly understood why the airbag marks show low levels of haematite. Image compiled from data from Opportunity's miniature thermal emission spectrometer, superimposed on an image from the panoramic camera (see image R360/113) | |
