Caldera of Apollinaris Patera,an ancient shield volcano near the Martian equator, northwest of the Gustev crater. The ancient volcano measures approximately 180 by 280 kilometres at its base and rises 5 kilometres higher than the surrounding terrain. Its caldera,a crater formed when the volcano collapses into itself,is some 80 kilometres across. In this false colour image, the terrain is covered partly by thin, diffuse clouds, indicated by bluish-tinted areas and north is to the right. The image was captured on 26th October 2004 by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) onboard ESA's Mars Express spacecraft. The ground resolution is approximately 11.1 metres per pixel | |
