Olivine mineral deposits on Mars. Infrared Mars Odyssey image of a region of troughs on the Martian surface called Nili Fossae. The image covers an area 380 kilometres wide. Pink, purple and blue show areas rich in the mineral olivine. Olivine forms into other minerals in the presence of water, suggesting that this relatively old region has never seen much water. NASA's Mars Odyssey was launched in April 2001 and reached Mars in October 2001. It mapped the chemical elements and minerals that make up the Martian surface, finding large amounts of water ice under the poles | |
