Martian crater. Mars Express view of a large impact crater (right) in the Promethei Terra area of Mars. The crater is 32 kilometres wide and up to 1200 metres deep. The darker area inside the crater is due to deflation,a geological term for the removal of loose material such as dust. Here, the dust has accumulated as the lighter area round the right-hand side of the crater. Dust patterns are also seen elsewhere in the image. Data from the High Resolution Stereo Camera. Mars Express has been orbiting Mars since December 2003 | |
