Sand and wind erosion,Mars Express image. These parallel lines in the rock are thought to be due to prevailing winds blowing sand that erodes the rock. The uneroded areas (one at lower left, two more at upper right) are about 17x9 kilometres in area. They are thought to consist of rock that is more resistant to the erosion. It may have taken millions of years for such features to appear on the Martian surface. Similar features on Earth are called yardangs. This area is near Olympus Mons.
