Martian surface,Mars Express satellite image. Surface of Mars showing a mesa or raised plateau (centre). Erosion of the surface has left these isolated areas of high ground. There is evidence of past erosion by flowing water. The summit of the plateau is about 3 kilometres (km) above the surrounding landscape. The impact craters (upper left & right) are approximately 7.6km wide. This image was taken from a height of 275km on 14 January 2004 by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board Mars Express | |
