Martian canyons. Landscape view of Martian canyons generated with data from the Mars Express orbiter. The canyons are part of Valles Marineris (Mariner Valley),a massive crack in the Martian surface near the equator. The canyons are many hundreds of kilometres long and are several kilometres deep in places. Erosion features in the landscape suggest that water once flowed here, shaping these canyons after their formation. Image data obtained on 14 January 2004 by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). Image R350/224 shows the view from orbit | |
