Martian rock layers. Channels cutting through layers of rock (white) on the surface of Mars. Layers such as those seen here might be evidence of liquid water in Mars' history, which may have harboured life. Such formations are formed by deposition of sediment in lakes and seas on Earth. Ripples of windblown sand (dark) are seen in the channels. This outcrop of hard sedimentary rock, known as White Rock,is in the Pollack Crater in the southern equatorial region of Mars. This image, measuring 3x12 kilometres, was taken by the Mars Orbiter Camera on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft orbiting Mars | |
