Composite-colour image of the Moon, made in violet, red and infrared light by the Galileo spacecraft at a range of 560,000km. The Moon's near side is to the right. Just left of centre is the circular Orientale basin, with the Mare Orientale in its centre. At upper right is the dark Oceanus Procellarum, with the smaller Mare Humorum beneath it. All of these dark features result from basaltic lava flows formed over 3 billion years ago. The Galileo probe made this image during a gravity-assist flyby of the Earth on its way to its final destination,Jupiter. There Galileo will release a probe into the Jovian atmosphere before entering orbit in late 1995 | |
