Radar image of Buck Crater,Venus. Buck Crater is an irregularly-shaped impact crater, found at the south-eastern edge of the lowland Guinevere Planitia,5 degrees south of the Venusian equator. The pattern of the radar-bright ejecta suggests that the impacting object struck the surface at an angle (arriving from right). The left side of the crater itself would thus have been deeper than the right. During subsequent in-filling of the crater by radar-dark lava, only the deeper portion would be filled, seen here as the dark central crescent. The crater was named after Pearl Buck (1892-1973),the US novelist. The data for this image were gathered by the Magellan spacecraft | |
