False-colour projection of the surface of the western hemisphere of Venus. This image was constructed largely from data gathered by the Magellan radar-mapping spacecraft during its first cycle of observations in 1991. The north pole is at the top of the image. The bright band across the disc shows the extent of Aphrodite Terra,a 'continent' about the size of Africa. At the left edge of the disc is the largest upland region. Just below this is a circular valley-like feature called Artemis Chasma. The Magellan data has been supplemented by data from the earlier Pioneer Venus where needed, with a general colour hue based on Russian Venera surface photographs | |
