Brahin meteorite. Fragment of the stony iron meteorite found near Brahin,in Belarus,in 1810. Meteorites are rocks that fall to Earth from space. Their composition can vary, and stony iron meteorites consist of iron alloys in rock. The Brahin meteorite is a type of stony iron meteorite called a Pallasite, originating in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It consists of an alloy (silver colour) of iron and nickel, and rock crystals (brown) of olivine. This sample, which is 5.5 by 4.3 centimetres, has been lacquered to avoid rusting. It weighs 56.1 grams. 850 kilograms of material was recovered from the Brahin meteorite | |
