Meteorite analysis. Researcher Dr David Kring prepares to use a light microscope to study a fragment from a meteorite,a piece of interplan- etary rock which fell to Earth. The fragment is only 30 millionths of a metre thick and has been highly polished. By shining light through it,the crystalline structure can be seen & different minerals can be identified by their different colours. Studies of meteorites may allow scientists to determine how an interstellar disk of gas and dust around the early Sun condensed to form the planets. Kring is a Senior Research Associate at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory at Arizona University,USA. Photographed in 1997 | |
