Meteor track. Nocturnal time-exposure image over trees of a meteor track (top left) among many star trails. The meteor track is longer and brighter than the star trails. Meteors originate as tiny interplanetary dust grains travelling between 35 and 95 km/s. As a meteor falls to Earth it burns up. The meteor's path can be seen as a streak of light known as a shooting star. This meteor is a Perseid. Perseids appear in great numbers around the 12th of August when the Earth crosses a band of dust called the meteor stream. Star trails are made by the movement of the stars through the sky as the Earth rotates. Photographed in Finland | |
