Time exposure photograph showing star trails (coloured arcs) and the trail of a Perseid meteor (the straight, horizontal line near the bottom of the image). The Perseid meteor shower occurs in August each year, reaching a maximum of about 60 meteors an hour on August 12. A meteor is a particle of dust which enters the Earth's atmosphere at high speed & burns up due to friction. This is seen as a line of light which lasts for about a second or so. Meteor showers occur when the Earth enters an orbiting stream of dust particles known as a meteor stream. Dupe of R305/038 with moonrise cropped out | |
