Testing a robot for use on Mars. Engineer working on a robot at the base camp of FMARS,the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station. FMARS,located in the Canadian Arctic,is one of several Mars simulation programs run by the international Mars Society. One of the aims is to test equipment in harsh conditions like those found on Mars. This robot was developed by DARPA,a research agency of the US Department of Defense. Snow can be seen on the robot's tracks. At left are two globes of Mars, and banners of ESA and NASA logos are hanging from the tent wall. Work at FMARS is carried out over several months in the Arctic summer. Several missions have been completed since the project began in 2000 | |
