Testing a robot for use on Mars. This is the remotely controlled Heel robot, being developed at FMARS,the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station, located in the Canadian Arctic. The robot moves on tracks and has a hinged arm that is used to gather rock samples. FMARS is one of several Mars simulation programs run by the international Mars Society. The aim is to test equipment and habitat designs in harsh conditions like those found on Mars, and to observe the effect on human crews. Work outside is carried out in spacesuits. Work at FMARS is carried out over several months in the Arctic summer. Several missions have been completed since the project began in 2000 | |
