Hubble Telescope servicing. The space shuttle's robotic arm (the Remote Manipulator System or RMS) lifts the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) out of its cargo bay after a completed servicing mission. The HST needs to be serviced every few years in much the same way as a ground-based telescope does. Photographed from the Discovery shuttle during mission STS-82 (11-21 February 1997). This mission was the second to service the HST since its launch in 1990. During the servicing a number of spacewalks were performed by astronauts to install improved instruments and replace some aging components. The shuttle also lifted the HST into a slightly higher orbit | |
