The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) seen moments after release from Shuttle Discovery on 25 April 1990,during Mission STS-31. On the left is the Remote Manipulator Arm that lifted the HST from the payload bay and held it in place during deployment of its solar panels (rectangular orange objects). Some trouble was experienced in deploying one of the panels, but a cure was effected from the ground before the crew were required to intervene. The large plate at the near end of the HST is a shutter, used to prevent sunlight entering the optical system. The HST will be re-visited by a Shuttle in mid-1993 to correct an optical fault in its primary mirror | |
