Lead for neutrino detector shield. Technician Carlo Bucci of the Gran Sasso Laboratory holding a bar of ancient Roman lead weighing more than 30 kilograms. The lead will be made into a shield for apparatus used for detecting dark matter. Old lead is preferred because it has lower radioactivity than new lead. Dark matter is as yet undetected matter postulated to exist in the universe. Neutrinos, produced from stars and supernovae explosions, may make up some of the dark matter. Gran Sasso is in Abruzzo,Italy. The laboratories are located 1400 metres underground. The rock overlay shields the laboratories from cosmic rays | |
