Lovell radio telescope dish. The 76 metre diameter Lovell radio telescope dish is located at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire,England. It is used to detect objects in space by reflecting radio waves from space onto the focus box at the top of Jodrell Bank's central tower. Commissioned in 1957,the Lovell telescope was named Mark 1 and was the world's first giant dish radio telescope. It was improved in 1970/71 and given the name Mark 1A. It was renamed again in 1987 as the Lovell Telescope,after Bernard Lovell who was the first Director of Jodrell Bank Observatory from 1945 to 1980 | |
