Night-time view of the floodlit 250 foot (76 metre) diameter dish of the Mark 1A radio telescope near Manchester,England. The dish reflects & focuses astronomical radio waves to the "focus box" at the top of the central tower. There the signal is amplified & filtered before being fed to the telescope's computers. The red lights on the focus box are warning lights for low-flying aircraft. Commissioned in 1957,the Mark 1 was the world's first giant dish radio telescope. It was improved in 1970/71 & designated the Mark 1A; in 1987 it was officially renamed the Lovell Telescope to honour Bernard Lovell, who founded the Jodrell Bank observatory. Photo taken May 1987 | |
