Parkes radio telescope. Silhouetted dish antenna of the Parkes 64-metre (210-feet) radio telescope in New South Wales,Australia. The collecting area of the dish is divided into three sections of differing construction. The dish has a solid steel plate from its centre to a diameter of 17 metres,a perforated aluminium plate to a diameter of 42 metres, and the rest consists of a mesh of galvanised steel. Together these sections give the dish a weight of 300 tonnes. This radio dish is used to observe wavelengths from 5 millimetres to 2 centimetres. This telescope was completed in 1961,and in 1997 is run as part of the Australia National Radio Astronomy Observatory | |
