The "millimetre wave" radio telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory,Arizona. The telescope's 11 metre (36-foot) diameter parabolic mirror makes observations at wavelengths of 1 to 9 mm,the part of the radio spectrum closest to visible light. The dome shields the telescope from the Sun to prevent distortion of its extremely precise aluminium surface. One of the telescope's primary activities is the detection of molecules in interstellar gas. The telescope is operated by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) | |
