Magellan mirror. Technician checks the 6.5-metre mirror for the Magellan 1 telescope which will be sited at the Las Campanas observatory,Chile. He is using a theodolite to check the position of the triangular load spreaders on the mirror's rear; these will attach it to its mount. The mirror's honeycomb design makes it strong but light. It is made of borosilicate glass & weighs 9 tonnes. It was cast by a process of melting, moulding and spinning in a rotating oven. The mirror is then finely polished. The mirror was cast in 1994,and the telescope is due to become operational in 1999. Photographed in 1997 at the University of Arizona Mirror Laboratory in Tucson,USA | |
