Optical telescope. Researcher using the optical telescope at the Capodimonte observatory,Naples,Italy. This is a 40-centimetre-diameter reflector telescope. Several mirrors (some seen inside the barrel of the telescope) direct the light to a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera, equipped with several different filters, and several eyepieces. Mounted on the barrel (at upper right, white) is the VAMOS (Velocity and Magnetic Observations of the Sun) instrument used for solar observations. The telescope is moved and pointed by a computer, using options selected by keypad. The computer also controls the movement of the roof of the overhead dome. The Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (OAC) was inaugurated in 1819. The VAMOS project started in 1999 | |
