History of Stonehenge. Sequence of artworks showing the history of the Stonehenge site,on Salisbury Plain,England. Stonehenge 1 (far left,3000 to 2900 BC) was a 110-metre-wide circular bank and ditch enclosure,with pits that may have contained wooden poles. Stonehenge 2 (2500 to 2400 BC) added wooden structures inside this enclosure. Stonehenge 3 (2300 BC) replaced these with a crescent of 80 standing stones. Stonehenge 4 (2200 to 2000 BC) used large sarsen stones to form a 30-metre-wide ring and central horseshoe shape. Stonehenge 5 (far right,1800 to 1600 BC) added a ring of smaller bluestones.
