Stonehenge. Composite image of star trails over the silhouetted stones of Stonehenge. Stonehenge is a prehistoric site comprised of four rings of standing stones in Wiltshire,UK. It is thought that Stonehenge was used to make astronomical obs- ervations. The site was built in several stages, beginning over 5000 years ago. The largest stones stand over 7 m high and weigh 40 tonnes. Star trails occur because of the apparent motion of the stars through the sky due to the rotation of the Earth about its axis. In the northern hemisphere the star trails form concentric circles centred on the Earth's North Celestial Pole (lower centre),which lies directly above the Earth's North Pole | |
