Adrenal medulla. Light micrograph of a section through the adrenal medulla, the inner part of the adrenal gland. The adrenal medulla consists of closely-packed clumps of secretory cells (blue) and venous channels (upper left cavity containing red blood cells). The medulla produces the hormones noradrenaline and adrenaline. These are stored up and released in response to stress. They act to increase heart rate and prepare the body for "fight or flight". They also promote the release of glucose into the bloodstream. Magnification: x160 at 35mm size | |
