| Light micrograph of a section through human skin from the palm of the hand. The outer layer of skin (top,orange) is the cornified layer and consists of layers of keratinized,flattened cells. Keratinization is the process whereby the protein keratin is laid down in the cells making them tougher. The undulating,pale pink region under the cornified layer is the region of the epidermis where the skin cells are continually generated. The blue region is the dermis,which consists of dense fibro-elastic tissue. Beneath it lies the hypodermis,the white areas being adipose tissue. Magnification: x20 at 35mm size | |
