False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a sweat pore in human skin. The skin was obtained from a blister on the palm of a man's hand. The skin on human palms is arranged in ridges, with sweat pores appearing as miniature depressions tunnelling into the ridges. The external surface of skin, the epidermis, consists of keratinised, flattened layers of cells. Keratinization occurs when deposits of the fibrous protein keratin are layed down in the cells, causing them to toughen. This outer layer of cells flakes off & is shed continuously; it is replaced by maturing cells from the skin beneath. Magnification: x80 at 35mm size,x125 at 6x4.5cm size | |
