Blood flow in foetal brain. Colour doppler ultra- sound scan showing blood flow in the cerebrum of the brain of a 22 week old foetus. The round skull (blue) is seen sectioned vertically. A branching arc of blood vessels (red) is seen running forward in the brain, comprising the anterior cerebral arteries. This doppler ultrasound scan was made by Dr Philippe Saada. Saada obtains such high- definition images by linking doppler ultrasound to a numeric colour video. Doppler ultrasound uses high-frequency sound to detect whether foetal development is normal, and can register moving particles like blood.
