Coloured scanning electron micrograph of sperm (yellow) fertilising an egg cell (round and pink). At top centre three polar bodies (purple and blue) are seen. Before ovulation the egg cell (primary oocyte) ends its first meiotic division which gives rise to two cells known as the secondary oocyte and the first polar body. If after ovulation the secondary oocyte is penetrated by sperm,it completes the second meiotic division producing a fertilised oocyte and another polar body. The first polar body divides into two and all three polar bodies shortly degenerate. Magnification: x1530 at 6x7cm size | |
